WOBS ~ Focus on Rahab ~ Wednesday Reflection Questions

Read Joshua 2:1-21

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Joshua+2%3A1-21&version=ESV

1. God commanded the complete destruction of Jericho and other Canaanite cities because of their extreme sins, including child sacrifice, shrine prostitution, and injustice of the powerful against the weak. What does it say about Him, then, that out of the whole city He spared a prostitute and her family?

2. Rahab betrayed her city.  What reasons did she give for doing this?  Can you think of any additional reasons she might have had?

a. She heard what God had done.

b. She heard of what had happened in Egypt.

c. She heard of what had happened to the two kings of the Amorites on the east side of the Jordan River.

d. When she heard of these things, she understood that the God of Israel was the only true God.

3. Why do you think the spies made a deal with her?

The spies knew that Rahab had faith in God and because of her faith they knew they could trust her.

Read James 2:25-26

25 And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

4. James said that Rahab was an example of the principle that real faith is linked to action?  How did she demonstrate this?

She put her faith in God above everything, even her own life and the life of her family members.  If it had been discovered by the king’s men that she had hidden the spies she would have been killed.  The very act of hiding the spies is Rahab putting her faith into action.

5. What risks have you been willing to take for your faith?  What risks haven’t you been able to take for your faith? Why?

I have never had to hide any spies or risked my life for my faith.  I pray that my faith would be as strong as Rahab’s if God ever asks me to risk everything for Him.  I have spoken up and shared my belief in God with people who are not open to hearing about God.  I have stood up for what I believe without excuse or apology, and I have always tried my best to express His truths with love.

Oaks Of Righteousness

Isaiah 61:1-3 "The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has annointed me; He has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lords's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; and to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion -- to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called Oaks of Righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display His glory.
