Focus ~ On Hagar ~ Thursday Reflection

This week in Springfield, MO a little 10-year-old girl was abducted and murdered.  My heart breaks for her family, especially her parents.  They knew that their child had been taken, there were witnesses to the crime…witnesses who tried to save Hailey, witnesses who chased after the vehicle.  For hours Hailey’s parents cried out to God to save their little girl and it did not happen.  The man who took her, shot her and God only knows the horror she went through before the bullet ended her life.

As I was reading Thursday’s assignment in our book, and thought about the tears that Hagar shed for her son, I could not help but think of the tears that came from both Hailey and her mother in those hours leading up to her death.  Hailey’s cries have been silenced and she is now in the loving arms of her Abba Father…Hailey’s mother’s cries, however, have not been silenced.

I pray that she knows God, because He is the only help to see her through the evil that has come into her life.

Psalm 34:18 ~ The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Psalm 147:3 ~ He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds

2 Corinthians 2:4 ~ Who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

1 Samuel 1:27-28 ~ For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 ~ But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.

Matthew 18:1-4 ~ At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

There is no way to rationalize this senseless act of violence, but these Bible verses provide a starting point to a path of comfort and peace in the midst of this tragedy.

Lord God,

Ever caring and gentle we commit to your love this little one, quickened to life for so short a time.  Enfold Hailey in eternal life.  We pray for her parents who are grieving and struggling to understand why their child died so tragically.  Give them courage and help them in and through their pain and grief. May they all meet one day in the joy and peace of your kingdom.  We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Oaks Of Righteousness

Isaiah 61:1-3 "The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has annointed me; He has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lords's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; and to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion -- to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called Oaks of Righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display His glory.
