I saw this picture on social media today and it really got me to thinking about our relationships with friends and family. First the picture and then my explanation.
“We can’t do the will of the Father if we’re wasting energy fighting who we are.”
I was bothered by this statement because, sometimes, I am tempted to live my life as someone who goes against the will of the Father. Sometimes, how my family and friends live their lives goes against the will of the Father.
12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:12
This verse has been ringing in my ears ever since I saw and read this picture. I think I need to get out my Bible and read all of 1 Timothy 6 and focus on what God wants me to see through all of this.
God is so good! In reading 1 Timothy 6, I am reminded of what treasures I want to bring with me to heaven. My relationships!
17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. 1 Timothy 6:17-19
I want my husband, my children, my grandchildren, my nieces, my nephews, my parents, my siblings and their spouses and my friends…I want these people to be with me in heaven. I want to know that together we fought the good fight of faith. I want to know that we didn’t look at each other and just accept those things that God has called us to change. I believe that there are times that we do need to fight who we think we are…those times when we are tempted to go with our baser instincts that go against God, which would put us outside of the will of the Father.
I can accept the above statement as truth, with this understanding, that God has a calling on each of our lives and we should NOT waste our energy fighting whom He has called us to be.
