Focus ~ On Standing for the Gospel Truth with Love

proverbs_8___7_by_smile_for_ceal6 Listen to me! For I have important things to tell you.
    Everything I say is right,
7 for I speak the truth
and detest every kind of deception.
8 My advice is wholesome.
There is nothing devious or crooked in it.
9 My words are plain to anyone with understanding,
    clear to those with knowledge.
10 Choose my instruction rather than silver,
and knowledge rather than pure gold.
11 For wisdom is far more valuable than rubies.
Nothing you desire can compare with it. Proverbs 8:6-11

What I am about to share with you has been on my mind and heart for quite some time.  The idea behind  this post came to me almost one month ago and I have hesitated to share it…but I believe it needs to be said and so I am just going to go forward and let God move as HE wills.

We know that lying is wrong.  We do our best to instill honesty into our children and grandchildren…we encourage them to tell the truth by telling them, “You will get in more trouble for lying to me than for telling me the truth.”

Why do we feel this way, where did “honesty is the best policy” originate?  Did somebody just decide one day that lying was wrong and we have all gone along with it ever since???

No, of course not…God told us that lying was wrong, we can find it in our Bibles.  It was part of God’s law handed down to Moses for God’s people.  The words found in the Bible have been the starting point for what is right and what is wrong since the beginning of time.

“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

“You shall not steal.”

“You shall not kill.”

“You shall not commit adultery.”

“You shall not covet anything of your neighbors, especially his wife.”

The above listed “laws” are found in the 10 Commandments, but these are not the only laws that have come from the Bible.  Before I go on and share some of the other laws, let’s first look at the word law as it is defined in biblical times.  The Hebrew translation for the word law is Torah which according to my research means guidance, instruction and doctrine.

God has given us the guidance of His laws, not to make our lives more difficult, but by following His instructions our lives are easier.  We complicate our lives when we look for ways to circumvent God’s doctrines.

So….what other direction has God provided for us to live in right standing with Him.

Ephesians 5:3-4 ~“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people.”

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 ~ Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, 10 or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people—none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.

1 Peter 4:15-16 ~“If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.”

So how am I going to tie the beginning of this post together with what I just shared?  This is how…

Lying is a sin!

Lying is a death sentence from God!

I believe one of the worst lies out there, is the ones that we tell ourselves and others that make us all comfortable in our sins.  The world is conditioning us into the position of believing that some of God’s words are no longer relevant.  That my friends, is lying to ourselves.

The Bible tells us that God never changes. He is the same yesterday, as He is today and as He will be tomorrow, so why do we allow the world to tell us that “The world is changing and we have to change with it, the world is more tolerant than it was back in biblical times.”  Refresh my memory, but does the Bible verse say, “Be ye conformed to the patterns of this world, let the world tell you how to think.”

NO!!!!

Romans 12:2 ~ “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

So, I have to ask, “If God never changes, if He always stays the same; doesn’t that also mean that His word never changes?

As Christians, we have to stand together on the firm foundation of God’s word.  We do this by focusing on Gospel truth and sharing it with love…one to another.  When we love as Jesus loves then the last thing we want to do is make each other comfortable with sin.

We are called to be wise and discerning…our reading today in Proverbs 9 begins with a beautiful picture of what life is like when we use good judgement.

1 Wisdom has built her house;
she has carved its seven columns.
2 She has prepared a great banquet,
mixed the wines, and set the table.
3 She has sent her servants to invite everyone to come.
She calls out from the heights overlooking the city.
4 “Come in with me,” she urges the simple.
To those who lack good judgment, she says,
5 “Come, eat my food,
and drink the wine I have mixed.
6 Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live;
learn to use good judgment.” Proverbs 9:1-6

I promise to never lie to you to make you feel better about sin, I ask that you do the same for me.  I never want sin to feel welcome in my life.

  1. Good, one, Patti! I believe that lying has become commonplace that some people don’t know a lie from the truth. They have told so many lies that they have to keep telling more lied to cover up the fact that they lied in the first place!! Sick and pitiful living all around us… They need Jesus – BAD!!
