Focus ~ One Goal and Day at a Time

Turn your ear and hear the words of the wise; focus your mind on my knowledge. Proverbs 22:17

Pattis Personal 31-Day Proverbs Challenge

Have you ever been to the circus???  A three-ring circus???  You want to watch all of the acts and yet, you only have two eyes and you are only able to focus on one event at a time.  I love the circus, but I am not a fan of the 3-ring kind, give me one ring and one event at a time, please and thank you!

This is the philosophy that I am bringing into 2014 too.  I do not want to start off the New Year with a divided focus, trying to catch all the acts that are happening at the same time in my family, with my friends, in my neighborhood, in my church,  and on social media. Overload will set in and I will begin to feel the stress, believe me I know…been there and have felt that stress!!!

I am going to implement a tool, that I found on-line, during this year of “focus”.  It is a worksheet called “2014 Goals”, with five sections where you can write your goals, your plan to meet the goal and the date you intend to accomplish the goal.  It also includes a little motto for inspiration, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

I intend to use this worksheet to meet one objective at a time.  My first expectation for myself this year is to read through the book of Proverbs during the month of January.  My plan is to read one chapter a day and since there are 31 chapters in the book of Proverbs, I will meet my objective on January 31st.

I have a larger purpose for this year than meeting my goals one objective at a time…I will share it with you soon and you will see why the beginning of this sentence made me laugh.  It was very punny!!!

I wanted to let you all know what I was focusing on for the month of January and please, feel free to join me in reading through Proverbs.  It is only January 2nd…it won’t be difficult for you to catch-up with me, just read Proverbs 1 ~ 2 today and we will be on the same page tomorrow.

Oh, and one more thing…I was given a camera for Christmas this year and it is another tool that I have been using to remind me of my one-word resolution; focus, point and shoot!  God knows just what we need and when we need it!!

So many of you have asked for the worksheet I decided to share it here…you will click on the link below and you will be taken to a different page…click again on 2014Goals and the .pdf file will open for you. Print it off and you are ready to go!!!

  1. Please share the worksheet for the Goals in 2014??? Love ya!!

  2. I will tomorrow morning. I am posting from my tablet and need the link that is on my laptop.

  3. The first 7 verses of Proverbs 1 sound like they are an introduction or a description that you would read on a book today. Vs. 7 jumped out at me, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” So many people, myself included in the past, waste so much time being foolish and turn against the wisdom and instruction of the Bible. I used to think, “There HAS to be more to life than this!!” And I KNEW what that “more” was, I just didn’t want to give up the life I was living. I wanted to live recklessly, not answering to anybody other than myself. And I was MISERABLE!! THAT is the most foolish thing in the world; to KNOW what would fix your life and not seek it out… Like vs. 22 says, I was simple and loved my simple ways – and I mean that… literally!

I also loved chapter 2, vs. 9-12a… it is almost saying that when you stop fearing wisdom and instruction; when you stop being a simpleton, THEN you will GET it!! You will understand what life is really all about. It is all about HIM!! It never was about me. Patti, I am so hard-headed!! It has been 4-1/2 years since I gave my life back to God. 20 long, miserable years I wasted!! Who know what God might have done with me had I only submitted to Him. Yes, it is all water under the bridge – I can’t go back and change it. But Proverbs 1-2 sure is making it easier to understand…

It is like the Nike commercial – – Just. Do. It.

Sorry I rattled on… you know how I can be. Love ya, my friend!!

    • I totally understand why you feel the way you do…it is never easy to forgive ourselves for the time that we wasted when we could have been living for His glory instead of our own. I think we need to stop beating ourselves up over it and move past it. Now that we know the truth, live each moment to bring glory to His name. When we focus on what should have been, I think we are making it about us again! Maybe???!!!!????!!!

When I started writing this post I had included the verses that spoke to me in Chapters 1 & 2 and then I removed them…not sure why now. But if I had left them in I would not have experienced the happy surprise that I got when I saw that both of us were drawn to the same verses. Proverbs 1:7 and Proverbs 2:10 are the verses that I have written on the pad of paper I am using to write the one verse each day that I feel drawn to in the daily reading. 31 verses to memorize and take with me on this year of focusing on God as I Seek His Wisdom in 2014!!

Love ya too and rattle on anytime!

Oaks Of Righteousness

Isaiah 61:1-3 "The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has annointed me; He has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lords's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; and to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion -- to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called Oaks of Righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display His glory.
