Today’s Assignment ~ Make sure that you have your prayer journal with you as you complete each day’s reading. You are going to want to keep track of the verses that are resonating with you, as you read.
1. If you have not already done so, answer the questions in this blog-post;
If you have answered them…review your answers prior to reading today’s assignment.
2. Say a prayer asking God to reveal Himself to you through His word.
3. Read Matthew 5-7 ~ As you read, highlight verses that are speaking to your heart and reflect on these questions…
• What is the main point of this portion?
• What does God – Father, Son or Holy Spirit – reveal of himself?
• What insight am I given into myself and into my life situation? Is there an example of a warning to heed? A promise to claim?
• What does Christ require of me now, in thought, word or action?
Reflections on today’s reading…
24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” Matthew 7:24-27
What a lot of information Jesus gives to us in these three chapters of Matthew!!! He covers a lot of ground!! But we need to do more than check it off of our reading list and move on…we need to follow what it says.
I know that, at least once a day, I fail miserably in following His teachings. I listen to gossip or I say something mean about someone or to someone. I hold unforgiveness in my heart or I judge somebody, while walking around with a log sticking out of my eye, and I do all this while ignoring the promptings from my spirit.
God holds me accountable here on earth, just as He will hold me accountable in heaven. I know when I have totally blown it!!! And if I continue to ignore Him and live my life in a way that is not pleasing to Him…the further away from God, I feel.
I can’t tell you the number of times I have wanted to come onto facebook and complain about something or someone who has disturbed the balance in my day. There has even been a time or two when I did just that…BUT, does that show a person who loves Jesus??? Does that show a person who has read the New Testament and is following the teachings of Christ??? Does that show a person who lives different from the world???
43 “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! 45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. 46 If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. 47 If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. 48 But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.”
We were born for such a time as this, to be His hands and feet here on earth and we can’t be effective witnesses when we conduct ourselves as everyone else does.
What will help you in 2014 to look different from the non-believer?? What will help you to be a better example for the world around you???
Take some time today and spend it with God, asking Him to show you the answers to these questions.
