Today’s Assignment ~ Make sure that you have your prayer journal with you as you complete each day’s reading. You are going to want to keep track of the verses that are resonating with you, as you read.
1. If you have not already done so, answer the questions in this blog-post;
If you have answered them…review your answers prior to reading today’s assignment.
2. Say a prayer asking God to reveal Himself to you through His word.
3. Read Matthew 1–4 ~ As you read, highlight verses that are speaking to your heart and reflect on these questions…
• What is the main point of this portion?
• What does God – Father, Son or Holy Spirit – reveal of himself?
• What insight am I given into myself and into my life situation? Is there an example of a warning to heed? A promise to claim?
• What does Christ require of me now, in thought, word or action?
In preparation for the Many Strands Challenge – Seeking God’s Wisdom for 2014 ~ I have read Matthew 1-4, several times. Here is what stood out to me the most as I read.
“18 This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph, her fiancé, was a good man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement[h] quietly.
20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus,[i] for he will save his people from their sins.”
22 All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet:
23 “Look! The virgin will conceive a child!
She will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel,[j]
which means ‘God is with us.’”
24 When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife. 25 But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.” Matthew 1:18-24
Reflections on Today’s Reading
Don’t you think that the devil was working overtime to try to thwart God’s plan for redemption? This was a BIG deal! God was going to become human to save us. You know the devil did not want that to happen!!!
I bet the devil was whispering all kinds of terrible things in Joseph’s ear, attempting to distract Joseph from following God’s will for this situation.
“Who has ever heard of someone being impregnated by God? Mary was unfaithful, plain and simple. Walk away from her, Joseph! You aren’t the father of this baby. This is not your responsibility.”
Can’t you just hear all the lies that the devil was pouring into Joseph’s mind???
Can’t you just hear all the lies that the devil is pouring into your mind?
The devil is a liar! The devil does not want what God wants. The devil wants to rob us of our birthright.
Joseph was a good man and he listened to the angel of the Lord. Joseph did not listen to the devil’s noise; he woke up and did as the angel of the Lord had commanded.
We need to shut off the noise from the devil too. We need to wake-up and do as the spirit inside of us commands us.
Are you listening to the lies or are you listening to God???
