Get Out of the Boat…

Jesus Walks on Water

22 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. 23 After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.

24 Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. 25 About three o’clock in the morning[b] Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!”

27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here![c]”

28 Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.”

29 “Yes, come,” Jesus said.

So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong[d] wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted.

31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”

32 When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.

34 After they had crossed the lake, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 When the people recognized Jesus, the news of his arrival spread quickly throughout the whole area, and soon people were bringing all their sick to be healed. 36 They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed.  Matthew 14:22-36

What is keeping you inside the boat????

I am not the best of swimmers.  If I am in a boat on the water and a storm blows up…the very last place you will find me is in the water.  I would dare to say that most of you would be in the boat with me.   Sometimes though Jesus asks us to step out of the boat and into the storms.

Let’s consider both times that Peter walked on the water in Matthew 14.  The first time Peter walked on the water he was on his own, yes Jesus was in front of him…but he was essentially walking in his own strength, because he took his eyes off of Jesus and saw the storm.  The second time Peter walked on the water, he was holding hands with Jesus.  Jesus did not carry Peter back into the boat, although He would have if that was necessary, no, they climbed back into the boat together.

Are you holding onto the hand of Jesus as you walk on top of the stormy water?  Or are you attempting to walk in your own power, as you slowly sink because your eyes are focusing on the storm instead of the Lifeguard??

My friend Helena shared a song today on the Many Strands page that goes perfectly with what God placed on my heart, this morning and, believe it or not, “A Prayer for Today” fits the message too.  What makes this so amazing is that both of us scheduled these statuses to post today…just about a week ago!!!  I glanced at them both this morning and then as I came to the end of this post I noticed some notifications from facebook…when I clicked on them another friend of Many Strands had liked both the song and the prayer.  That’s when I really concentrated on them and they are both the perfect way to end this devotion, and to wish you a Happy Sunday!

Oaks Of Righteousness

Isaiah 61:1-3 "The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has annointed me; He has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lords's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; and to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion -- to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called Oaks of Righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display His glory.
