Sabbatical – Day 18 – Psalms 17

I read through Psalms 16 – 20 today and found God leading me to reflect and mediate on Psalm 17…

Psalms 17 NIRV – A prayer of David

Lord, rise up. Oppose them and bring them down.
With your sword, save me from those evil people.
Lord, by your power save me from people like that.
They belong to this world. They get their reward in this life.

You satisfy the hunger of those you love.
    Their children have plenty.
And those children store up wealth for their children.
Because I do what is right, I will enjoy your blessing.
When I wake up, I will be satisfied because I will see you. Psalms 17:13-15

Have you ever noticed that when there is something about you that you do not like or when you are feeling convicted in some area of your life, that you start lashing out at others?  I believe that the anger and hatred that we see in the faces of those who oppose us, including ourselves, is a reflection of what we are feeling towards ourselves during our times of denial.

A person with a true and pure heart for God does not go around hating other people; whether these other people are believers or not.  People, who are truly motivated by God, demonstrate Jesus in their demeanor and behaviors.  They see others with the eyes of Jesus, they touch others with His hands, they listen to their voices with Jesus’ ears, they speak the words that Jesus would speak, they serve and they sacrifice as His example has shown them, and they love with a heart that is tuned to His.

This is my prayer for today…

Lord, rise up.  Oppose me and bring me down.  With Your sword, save me from myself.  Lord, by Your power save me from this world.  I do not belong to this world and I do not want to receive my reward here on earth.  Take away any anger I feel at others and myself.  Cleanse me of this sin of pride.  Take away any anger that my children feel against others and themselves.  Cleanse them of their pride.  Make us hungry for You, Lord.  I know that true hunger can only be satisfied through You and You know that the only wealth that I wish to leave for my children and their children is the riches that come from knowing and loving You.  Satisfy me, my children and my children’s children by waking us up to see Your likeness in our faces, here on earth, as well as in heaven.  In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
