Sabbatical – Day 13 & 14

I posted to my facebook page yesterday that I was going to be taking a sabbatical from my sabbatical.  Our family went to a local river and spent a wonderful 5 hours playing in the water, catching small fish with nets and just being together; laughing and having fun.

When we got home the grandchildren and I went to church.  What a wonderful ending to a perfect day, and what a message from God I received from my pastor!!!  Here is my take on what I heard at church last night.

Taking Out the Trash

I used to work for a boss who accepted no less than perfection from his employees.  I found this out the hard way, within the first two months of working for him, when I made my first mistake.  Here is what he told me, “Patti, you made a mistake and you have learned a lesson from it.  It is over and done with, forgotten by me.  Forgotten, that is, until you make another mistake.  At that point I will remember this one again and begin to wonder if you can really do this job.”

Mistakes at this job were not really forgiven or forgotten.  They were placed in the trash can, but the trash was never dumped into the incinerator and destroyed.  The trash was saved and then upended on my desk for me to wallow in, once again!

My pastor’s sermon, last night, was all about throwing away the trash of our past sins and mistakes.  There is nothing I can do about the people, in my life, who refuse to let me off the hook from my past transgressions, however, I can do something about letting myself off the hook.  I need to take out my own trash!!!  If God has forgiven me, then I need to forgive me.

Psalm 103:12 – He has removed our sins as far from us
as the east is from the west.

Instead of covering up that trash with odor eliminators…I need to throw out the trash!

Instead of hanging onto all the bags from my past…I need to throw out the trash!

Instead of ruminating on all the things that people have done or said to me in my life…I need to throw out the trash!

Unless I have thrown something really important into my trash receptacle, I am not going to allow myself to go look at yesterday’s, last week’s, last month’s or even last year’s trash anymore.   Friends, I know the Truth and I know that He has set me free!  I do not need to hang on to mine or anyone else’s trash…what do I need to do???  Say, it with me…”I need to throw out the trash!”

John 8:31-32 – “Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.  And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Oaks Of Righteousness

Isaiah 61:1-3 "The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has annointed me; He has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lords's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; and to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion -- to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.
