Sabbatical – Day 12 – The Friendship Pillar – Part 2

“A (wo)man who has friends must herself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24

the four pillars

FRIENDS.  We all have them and we all need them. God created us to live in community with one another and as a Christian, it is important to be friends with other Christians who put Jesus in the center of all that they are and in all that they do!

I want to share with you Matthew Henry’s Commentary on today’s verse.  Read it carefully and prayerfully…

“Solomon here recommends friendship to us, and shows, 1. What we must do that we may contract and cultivate friendship; we must show ourselves friendly. Would we have friends and keep them, we must not only not affront them, or quarrel with them, but we must love them, and make it appear that we do so by all expressions that are endearing, by being free with them, pleasing to them, visiting them and bidding them welcome, and especially by doing all the good offices we can and serving them in every thing that lies in our power; that is showing ourselves friendly.

Si vis amari, ama– If you wish to gain affection, bestow it.—Sen. Ut ameris, amabilis esto– The way to be beloved is to be lovely.—Ovid. 2. That it is worth while to do so, for we may promise ourselves a great deal of comfort in a true friend. A brother indeed is born for adversity, as he had said, Prov. 17:17. In our troubles we expect comfort and relief from our relations, but sometimes there is a friend, that is nothing akin to us, the bonds of whose esteem and love prove stronger than those of nature, and, when it comes to the trial, will do more for us than a brother will. Christ is a friend to all believers that sticks closer than a brother; to him therefore let them show themselves friendly.”

I think we all know that in order to have friends, we need to be a friend.  A true friend loves intentionally.  I don’t think it is always easy to be someone’s friend and that is why in order to be a good friend…Jesus needs to be the center of my life and the center of my friendship pillar.  Today’s verse tells us that there is One that will stick closer to us than a brother, and He does, but it is important for us to stick close to Him too!  Why?  Because without Him we can do nothing.

“He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5, NKJV

I had a Christian friend who came into my life and God used her to bring change to my life; good and godly change to my life!  Our paths were clear and I know Jesus was at the center of both of our lives.  Then suddenly, she zigged when she should have zagged and her path became a bit less clear.   Then I zagged when I should have zigged, and my path was full of rubble.  We both kept on moving forward, and slowly but surely our intentions changed.  We allowed doubt and fear replace Jesus in the relationship.  In the beginning of the friendship, our time together was all about Jesus…praising and praying together; at the decline of the friendship, our time together was all about others; defaming and denouncing.

It was no longer about what He had done for us, it was about what they had done to us!

Jesus was no longer a part of this friendship equation!  The friendship no longer produced fruit that was good, but rotten fruit, there was aplenty!!!   We were both to blame for the implosion of this friendship.  We stopped being intentional in our friendliness toward each other.  We no longer loved like Jesus loves.

I share this story with you as a cautionary tale…and to tell you, it is very easy to bond with someone over a shared experience; good or bad.  It is so important to bring Jesus into the beginning and middle of your friendships and hopefully, this will prevent the end of them.

Really…it is vital to bring Jesus into the beginning and middle of all of your foundational pillars.  Don’t leave it up to others to be intentional for you or wait for them to pray and praise the Lord.  Don’t give control of your life or your relationships to anyone, but the Lord!  Jesus should be the center of it all…from the beginning to the end!  Let this song be your prayer this morning…

Jesus at the center of it all
Jesus at the center of it all
From beginning to the end
It will always be, it’s always been You Jesus
Jesus

Jesus at the center of it all
Jesus at the center of it all
From beginning to the end
It will always be, it’s always been You Jesus
Jesus

Nothing else matters, nothing in this world will do
Jesus You’re the center, and everything revolves around You
Jesus You

So Jesus be the center of my life
Jesus be the center of my life
From beginning to the end
It will always be, it’s always been You Jesus
Oh Jesus

Nothing else matters, nothing in this world will do
Jesus You’re the center, and everything revolves around You
Jesus You

From my heart to the Heavens
Jesus be the center
It’s all about You
Yes it’s all about You

Nothing else matters, nothing in this world will do
Jesus You’re the center, and everything revolves around You
Jesus You

Jesus at the center of it all
Jesus at the center of it all
From beginning to the end
It will always be, it’s always been You Jesus
