Sabbatical – Day 11 – The Friendship Pillar – Part 1

“A (wo)man who has friends must himself/herself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24

I have been using the New Living Translation Bible quite a bit in my study of God’s word.  I just now looked up Proverbs 18:24 in my NLT Bible and I feel that it does not speak to the true meaning of this verse, like the NKJV does.

Friends pillar

“There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24

When I read our verse in NKJV I feel the last sentence is reminding us of WHO our truest friend is going to be.  I see this as a prophetic word from God telling us that “there is a friend, coming, WHO will stick to us closer than a brother.”  The NLT version makes this verse strictly about the nature of “friends”.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it is important to reflect on both versions of this verse.  We need to be reminded that Jesus is our truest friend AND we need to be taught how to be a “real” friend to others.

I am going to reflect on both versions as I look at the fourth pillar, The Friendship Pillar, today and tomorrow.  Today I am going to focus on earthly friendships and tomorrow I am going to look at the greatest friendship I have ever experienced.  What a friend I have in Jesus!

What kind of friend am I?

I am the type of friend who will speak truth to you, when you ask me for it and sometimes, when you don’t!  What exactly does that mean?  I believe that there are times when God places words on my heart and He makes it quite clear they should be shared, in love and concern for you.  This is not exclusive to my relationship with God, I believe that He also will bring words to you that He intends for you to share with me.  Neither one of us should miss out on these divine appointments from God.

My friendship pillar can only help me hold up my foundation if I allow my friends to come alongside of me and use the tools that God places into their hands to make my pillar stronger.  I have a go-to godly friend who I talk to about those times when the way just doesn’t seem clear.  She has followed God’s lead and has used His tools to shore up my pillar when it has begun to lean.  Although I have to tell you that as long as my pillar leans more to the right than to the left she doesn’t worry too much…haha!

Seriously, we all need godly friends that we can go to and depend upon to help us and point us in the right direction.  We need to be that kind of friend to others too.  I pray that I am that kind of friend; one who points you to Jesus and speaks truth in your life and most importantly…does these things through the wisdom, discernment and love that only comes from God.

My godly friend posted a prayer to her wall this morning…it was a divine appointment from God for her to speak into my life…

I would only add to this prayer…

And, Lord let me share everything from You with a heart that is true, honest, just, pure, lovely and virtuous!

Join me tomorrow as I reflect upon how important it is to have Jesus as the center of your pillar of friends.

Oaks Of Righteousness

Isaiah 61:1-3 "The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has annointed me; He has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lords's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; and to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion -- to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called Oaks of Righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display His glory.
