July 3rd – I Need Rest

July 3rd Assignment – read “I Need Rest”.

Trusting God by Sharon Jaynes, Mary Southerland and Gwen Smith

Week 4

Today’s Truth:

Mark 6:30-32

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught.  Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”  So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.

Girlfriend to Girlfriend:

When I was a little girl my family would go to the Shrine Circus each summer.  There was always someone who would attempt the feat of spinning plates on top of poles placed in the ground.  They would start spinning one and then they would add another…and then another…and then another…soon they would have 6 or 7 plates spinning at the top of those poles, all at the same time.  It was always tricky because when the plates slow down; they are no longer balanced correctly and can fall from the pole and the plate spinner would have to hurry and get that plate spinning faster again.  Sometimes two or more would begin to slow down at the same time and usually it would be the plates at the opposite end from each other, the spinner was kept very busy keeping all those plates spinning at the same time.

If you are going to be a plate spinner you need to be quick and you are going to need to keep your eye on all the plates at the same time.  When the plate spinner was performing I was totally mesmerized by the spinning plates.  I would watch those plates spin probably as much if not more than the performer.  I would fret and worry as soon as I saw one slow down and, I wanted to yell “Oh no…hurry the second one on the right is slowing down and so is the first one to the left…hurry get them spinning faster so they don’t fall and break.”

As I thought back on those times, both last night and now again this morning, God spoke to my heart.  “Patti, aren’t you like that still.  Your loved ones are those plates…imagine each of them on top of a pole and they are spinning around and around…you don’t trust Me anymore than you trusted that plate spinner to do what is best in their life.  You have days of worrying that if you don’t direct Me to how to fix the problem, it won’t get fixed.  I am the ultimate plate spinner…the whole world is in My control and I know just the speed to keep the world spinning in the right direction.  You can trust Me with your loved ones.  Remember I love them more than you and My plans are way better for them than yours.  Their spinning does not make Me dizzy and it certainly will not mesmerize Me…both of these things happen to you when you don’t release them to Me.  Let them go…give them to Me.  You can trust Me!

Let’s Pray:

Dear Lord,

Thank You…my heart is overflowing with Your love for all of us.  The lessons you teach Me as I read these devotions and as I begin to type the words to share with these ladies…wow, why do I ever have moments of doubt.  You have never let me down and You always provide a way.  I know that You are the only one that can keep everything spinning in the right direction.  I am going to do my very best to take my hands off of all of those plates and leave the spinning to You.  God, I trust You!!!

In Jesus name, Amen

Your Turn:

I realize that the message I received from this devotion is not quite the message that Gwen shared. Her message was more in the area of spending time with God one on one. This illustrates a truth that I want to share with you about these devotions…as you read these words, God is going to use them to speak to your life. He has a message for you in these words and the plate spinning or Gwen’s story about Kennedy taking her face and directing her attention to her…they are going to be used in just the right way to bring you a message from God. It might not be the same message for each of us and that is what is great about God and it is what makes us who we are in Him. We are all going to apply these devotions in just the right way for our own life. Which brings me to this point…how did God have you apply this devotion to your life? I would love to read how God spoke to you through Gwen’s words and the words He gave me to share….ready…set…GO!

Oaks Of Righteousness

Isaiah 61:1-3 "The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has annointed me; He has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lords's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; and to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion -- to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called Oaks of Righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display His glory.
